My cheeky monkeys!
Today I want to let you know about a new writing craft book that you might want to add to your shelves. Scratch that, YOU DO want to add to your shelves.
Because it is awesome.
Lisa Cron’s WIRED FOR STORY focuses on telling a great story. This isn’t the same thing as ‘writing well’, but it’s just as important. Using neuroscience as a backbone, Lisa describes several ways in which we are ‘hardwired’ to storytelling, and how we, as authors, can use this to make our writing better.
Many of you have read SAVE THE CAT (STC) by Blake Snyder – another classic! WIRED FOR STORY pairs really well with STC, because while STC explores the logistics of how great stories are put together, WIRED FOR STORY takes this a little further and explores how to actually accomplish this using concrete examples based on how our brains work.
Each chapter explains a ‘Cognitive Secret’, and how it relates to writing a story with a ‘Story Secret’. For example, the neuroscience of memory is used in relation to how we should be using flashbacks and subplots without interrupting the story. Very cool stuff! There is also a handy checklist at the end of each chapter that helps keep your current WIP in check as you go.
If you haven’t checked this book out yet, don’t miss it!
Are there other writing craft books that have permanent homes on your shelf? Let me know in the comments so we can check them out!
